Historical Publications LLC ("we," "us," or "our") publishes Civil War News and Military Antique Collector. This page explains, plainly, what information changes hands when you subscribe, order, write to us, or simply visit this website, and who handles it.
In Short
- This website has no reader accounts or logins, and its own pages set no cookies.
- It runs no Google Analytics and no advertising trackers. Page views and page loading speed are counted with Cloudflare Web Analytics, which gives us site totals rather than a profile of any visitor; Cloudflare states that this service does not use cookies (see Cloudflare's privacy policy).
- Subscriptions, gift subscriptions, and back issues are ordered through SimpleCirc, a separate site with its own privacy policy.
- We do not sell, rent, or trade your personal information.
Subscriptions and Orders
When you subscribe or order online, you do so on SimpleCirc, which handles the order and the payment. When you subscribe or order by phone or mail, you give the same details to us directly. Either way, the information involved is:
- Contact information: your name, mailing address, email address, and phone number.
- Payment information: handled by the payment processors that take the payment. We do not store your full card number.
- Subscription details: which publication, the subscription type, and any correspondence with us about it.
We use it to process and deliver your subscription and orders, send renewal reminders and account notices, answer your questions, and meet legal obligations. We share it only with the companies that help us do those things, such as printing and mailing services, payment processors, and email service providers, or when the law requires it. Your mailing address goes to our postal fulfillment service solely so your magazine reaches you.
Hosting and Security
This website is hosted on Cloudflare. Like every web host, Cloudflare receives your IP address and browser details with each request so it can deliver the page and turn away automated abuse. If Cloudflare asks your browser to pass a quick security check, it may set a short-lived cookie recording that you passed.
Banner Advertisements
The banners on these pages are served by ArtifactSearch.com, a service of Historical Publications LLC, not by an outside ad network. When a banner is seen or clicked, ArtifactSearch records which banner it was, whether it was seen or clicked, the page and site it appeared on, the time, and your browser's user-agent line (for example, "Chrome on a Mac") so automated traffic can be screened out. To choose which banner to show, the page also tells ArtifactSearch what kind of page it is (for example, the home page or an article), the section it belongs to, and whether it is being viewed on a phone or a computer. None of this identifies you. It sets no cookies. Your IP address is used only to limit repeated requests and is not stored. Clicking a banner takes you to the advertiser's own website, which has its own privacy practices.
Newsletter Sign-Up
Pages carry an optional sign-up box for the Historical Publications newsletter. If you fill it in, your name and email address go to Constant Contact, the service that sends the newsletter, and are used only to send it. The form is protected by Google reCAPTCHA, which checks that a real person is signing up. Every newsletter includes an unsubscribe link, and you can also ask us to remove you.
Searching the Archives
- Civil War News Article Archives. The article search runs inside your own browser, so your search words are not sent to us.
- Civil War Photography Archive. This search looks up photographs in public collections. Your search words go straight from your browser to the Library of Congress and the National Archives, which return the results, and photographs are also loaded from Flickr. Links to other collections carry your search words to those institutions when you click them. Each handles the request under its own policy.
Fonts, Sharing, and Outside Links
- Fonts. Page lettering loads from Google Fonts, so Google receives the ordinary request information needed to deliver it.
- Share buttons. The Facebook, X, and Email buttons are plain links, and nothing is sent to those companies unless you click one. Copy Link and your phone's own share sheet work inside your browser.
- Outside links. Links to Civil War News on Facebook, SimpleCirc, ArtifactSearch, museums, and other sites take you off this website. Those sites follow their own privacy policies.
Cookies
This website's own pages set no cookies. The cookies you may receive come from Constant Contact and Google reCAPTCHA on pages with the newsletter form and, if Cloudflare runs a security check, a short-lived Cloudflare cookie. SimpleCirc and the payment services use their own cookies on their own sites. You can block or delete cookies in your browser settings and this website will still work.
Email and Letters You Send Us
If you write to us, your address and message are used to answer you and for nothing else. Writing to us does not add you to the newsletter.
Your Choices
- Update your information: contact us at any time to change your mailing address, email, or other subscription details.
- Opt out: to stop renewal notices or promotional mail, call us at (800) 777-1862 or email info@historicalpublicationsllc.com.
- Access or deletion: you may ask to see, or have us delete, the personal information we hold about you.
Data Security
We take reasonable physical, electronic, and administrative precautions to protect the information we hold. No method of internet transmission or storage is completely secure, however, and we cannot guarantee absolute security.
Children's Privacy
Our publications and website are written for historians, collectors, and researchers. They are not directed to children under 13, and we do not knowingly collect personal information from children.
Changes to This Policy
If our practices change, this page will be updated and the "Last Updated" date above revised.
